Joey

Joey the baby Chipmunk
A diary of a summer spent looking after an injured little baby chipmunk. I did my best in rehabilitating her. Now I await the results of her release into the wilds of our 5 acre backyard. I hope she has a long and happy life!

  1. Hi Colette,

I found a baby chipmunk on the side of the road Friday morning when I was cycling. I brought him home in my jersey pocket, and have been feeding him bread, bird seed, etc. as well as a "home" with straw, leaves, and a small container with a burlap blanket to hide and cuddle in. He doesn't have any trouble eating and drinks water. He seemed stunned when I found him, I just scooped him off the pavement without resistance. He is now very frisky and I am trying to determine if I can release him in my yard - we live in a home with woods and a creek in the back, or if I should take him back to the area where I found him. I'm afraid that he may be rejected by the chipmunk colony that lives here, and we also have short eared owls that prowl the woods at night. Any suggetions? He's a little skittish, but doesn't bite. BTW, I named him Jasper. Thank you!
